Parsing Long-Term Tree Recruitment, Growth, and Mortality to Identify Hurricane Effects on Structural and Compositional Change in a Tropical Forest

چکیده

After hurricane disturbances in tropical forests, the size structure and species composition are affected by immediate mortality, subsequent recruitment individual growth. Often, post-disturbance stand-level data presented but understanding of components that affect changes growth longer-term responses to forest lacking. To answer questions about how recruitment, change among successional Plant Functional Types (PFT) through time after a disturbance, we use long-term census (1989–2014) collected Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico. We developed an algorithm fill missing diameter from set was three months Hurricane Hugo; subsequently at five-year intervals. Both hurricane-induced mortality were lower stems with larger diameters, varied PFTs Early, Mid, Late, Palm. Tree rates observed decrease since disturbance. Five years hurricane, minimal then increased gradually time. In contrast, highest five decreased The palm Prestoea montana became most abundant as it had lowest recruitment. Twenty-five Late PFT dominate shifting pre-hurricane conditions.

Long-term hurricane damage effects on tropical forest tree growth and mortality

Hurricane winds can have large impacts on forest structure and dynamics. To date, most evaluations of hurricane impacts have focused on short-term responses after a hurricane, often lacked pre-hurricane measurements, and missed responses occurring over longer time scales. Here, we use a long-term data set (1974–2009, 35 years) of tree stems (.3 cm in diameter at 1.3 m aboveground) in four sites...

Residual Long-Term Effects of Forest Fertilization on Tree Growth and Nitrogen Turnover in Boreal Forest

The growth enhancing effects of forest fertilizer is considered to level off within 10 years of the application, and be restricted to one forest stand rotation. However, fertilizer induced changes in plant community composition has been shown to occur in the following stand rotation. To clarify whether effects of forest fertilization have residual long-term effects, extending into the next rota...

Rapid Structural and Compositional Change in an Old-Growth Subtropical Forest: Using Plant Traits to Identify Probable Drivers

Recent studies have shown directional changes in old-growth tropical forests, but changes are complex and diverse, and their drivers unclear. Here, we report rapid net structural and compositional changes in an old-growth subtropical forest and we assess the functional nature of these changes to test hypothetical drivers including recovery from past disturbances, reduction in ungulate browsing,...

Intervention Analysis of Hurricane Effects on Snail Abundance in a Tropical Forest Using Long-Term Spatiotemporal Data

Large-scale natural disturbances, such as hurricanes, have profound effects on populations, either directly by causing mortality, or indirectly by altering ecological conditions or the quantity, quality, and spatial distribution of resources. In the last 20 years, two major disturbances, Hurricane Hugo in 1989 and Hurricane Georges in 1998, struck the Luquillo Mountains of Puerto Rico, providin...
